Tailor-made courses to suit your learning style
We run our Guitar Workshops in ‘The Backroom’ @ The Greystones, Ecclesall. To find out more, contact our guitar tutors and they’ll be happy to help!
We have a range of courses to suit any aspiring guitarist, from beginner to more advanced students. All of the courses span a 10 week period and are one hour in length, on a once-a-week basis.
The beginners’ guitar course will consist of a one-hour lesson in a group with no more than seven other pupils, which will run over a period of ten weeks. At the end of the course, you will know how to play and use the following:-
- All major and minor primary chords; the major, minor, pentatonic and blues scales
- Chord progressions, rhythm patterns, and reading chord charts
- You’ll learn a classic riff/song every lesson!
- Videos are available for beginners and intermediate students, so you never miss a week’s criteria
- Alternative strumming, alternative picking, arpeggiating chords
- Understanding simple note values
- Learn how to read chord diagrams and tabs
Each week you will be able to play a song which will feature the techniques and theory covered in the lesson. Learn as part of a group, with no pressure, in an inspiring music venue … ideal for all beginners!
The intermediate course is ideal for anybody who’s been playing guitar for a while and feel like they want to progress their playing to the next level. Learn more advanced elements of you’re playing such as Barre chords and how to build guitar harmonies.
New techniques such as perfecting your alternative picking and making more use of slurs, such as hammer-ons and pull-offs, which will help you sound an all-round better player.
We also teach you to find your way around the guitar by teaching you different more complex scales in different positions on the fret bored. The course also covers how to improvise over chord progressions and starts to help you understand the theory of how songs are written.
The advanced course is for anybody who’s been playing for years and feel like you want that extra push to take you to the next level. Our structured course will teach you new techniques such as tapping and finger-style playing. We also cover how to use altered tunings and use of a capo. The course will also help you understand how to start reading from scores, following repeats codas/dynamics etc so it becomes easier to open a book and attempt a song.
The Advanced Guitar course now offers a unique opportunity to play songs with a full band on stage to get the live experience of playing guitar! It works by getting a professional drummer, bassist and singer into the session to play along with the group. Once we’re all pleased with the sound we get everybody on stage at the last session and play live through a P.A. This is a fantastic experience to play at one of Sheffield’s most prestigious stages at The Greystones.
The improvisation sessions are perfect for students that have completed our 10 week Advanced Course or an experienced guitarist. The improvisation course will run across a further 10 weeks and we’ll teach a new genre each week. The course will show you how to play the rhythm and lead to each genre.
The worksheet will have a chord progression followed by scales and lick ideas for the improvisation. Each student will take it in turns to practice their piece. The improvisation will also have a guest drummer to play along with so the sessions will have a full band feel to it. Playing with a drummer and other musicians is crucial to improving timing and musicianship.
